If you ask me, it’s just about the peak of what video games can do. You spawn into an elaborate and distinctly ’70s-tinged cockpit - you basically move around the cosmos my manipulating an eight-track mixed with an old floppy drive - and you then bounce from one planet to another in a roomy but manageable universe, heading down to one surface and then the next and solving a peculiarly wordless kind of puzzle when you get there....

Reports of Netflix’s plans to enter the world of video games began to circulate in May, and the company finally made it official in July, saying it was “in the early stages of further expanding into games” and that it viewed gaming “as another new content category for us.” It also clarified it would initially focus on mobile games, with a later report suggesting the first batch of these titles would launch as part of Netflix’s subscription service some time next year....

If you’re yet to try it, Spiritfarer is a memorable and moving adventure game where you shepard a crew of lost souls into the after life, while slowly upgrading your boat. In a nutshell, it’s a “cosy management game about dying”, and one of my favourite games from 2020. If this news means more people get to play it - all the better! “By marrying Metroidvania, management sim and a good dose of kindness, Spiritfarer manages to feel simultaneously familiar and refreshing,” Malindy wrote in Eurogamer’s Spiritfarer review....

The new live-action series - not to be confused with Netflix’s four-episode CGI effort Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, which launched last year - splits its Racoon-City-focused storyline across two distinct timelines, straddling either side of a global apocalypse caused by a deadly virus. At one end, pre-apocalypse, we follow the adventures of teenage sisters Jade and Billie Wesker as they begin to notice strange things are afoot in New Racoon City....

Activision Blizzard has faced a relentless stream of shocking allegations relating to its workplace culture since last July, when a State of California lawsuit filing called the publisher “a breeding ground for harassment and discrimination against women”. Building on that lawsuit, the Wall Street Journal published a report in November claiming Bobby Kotick had been aware of the allegations of sexual misconduct and mistreatment of female employees across many parts of the company “for years”, but had failed to act on them or tell the board of directors and executives everything he knew....

Whilst we’ve yet to hear of a definitive date, creator Yoko Taro was at least able to confirm the release window during Aniplex Online Fest, which took place over the weekend. Interestingly, Taro also revealed that due to the differences between storytelling via games and traditional mediums - and despite Aniplex’s hopes of a faithful retelling of the game - the anime’s story will differ. Apple’s iOS 16 already brought compatibility with Nintendo’s Switch Pro controller and Joy-Con. Now, with its 16.1 update, the four classic controllers can also be used: the NES, SNES, Mega Drive, and N64 controllers. That’s according to a new report published by Nintendo Life, which cites a former Nintendo of America employee speaking anonymously on the inner workings of the company. Earlier this week, Nintendo upset the internet when it announced it would remove the ability to purchase digital 3DS and Wii U games from March next year. (Wii U turns 10 years old this November.) “Nintendo knows it has to support a product for a minimum of 10 years or they risk some class action,” the ex-Nintendo employee said, adding that the decision not to support Wii U long-term was made long ago....

Hello Games revealed a PSVR2 update for No Man’s Sky was in the works back in June, teasing an enhanced VR experience that would utilise the power of PlayStation 5, PSVR2, and its new Sense controllers to build on the game’s 2019 VR implementation, and “take that sense of immersion and believability up by several major notches.” Evidence that PSVR2 owners wouldn’t have to wait long for No Man’s Sky’s promised VR upgrade first surfaced earlier this week when sharp-eyed PS5 Store users (by which I mean Eurogamer’s resident VR aficionado Ian Higton) spotted an updated description on Hello Games’ PSVR2 reveal trailer, pointing to a February release....

Despite whatever images his monstrous nickname might conjure in your mind, the outpouring of love for John on his twitter feed shows that he was an incredibly kind human being whose constant generosity meant he was nothing like the flaming beast from Tolkien’s story. Hilltop, a translator of Japanese games, is releasing a patch for the game - available from 11th July. The game was originally released by Sony in 2000 but never made its way to the west. The amazingly inventive, brilliantly emotive spacebound time loop won myriad awards upon its original release in 2019, releasing to outstanding reviews and near unanimous praise. It won the big prize at last year’s video game BAFTAs, and we’ve not been shy in getting in a bother about it ourselves. There’s no definite release date yet for Outer Wilds on Switch, but the news does come as part of Nintendo’s look at its games for the coming six months, and it’s got a vague summer release window at present....

Outriders supports full crossplay - allowing you to play multiplayer with friends on different systems - from launch. This is particularly useful if a friend has Xbox Game Pass on console, and you want to join a friend who is playing on another system. Though the feature works differently to other crossplay-enabled games, getting a session up and running is relatively straightforward. Update (April 13th): Developer People Can Fly has confirmed cross play is now operational between all platforms following the latest patch....

The key difference between the generations is very simple - frame-rate. It’s worth pointing out here that Outriders isn’t a straight ‘back compat plus’ upgrade as far as we can tell, it is definitely a native PlayStation 5 application, but the overall effect looks pretty similar in that a 30fps experience on the last-gen machines has the frame-rate limiter removed, allowing what is effectively the same game to run at up to 60 frames per second....

I’m playing the Overwatch 2 closed alpha PvP test ahead of the closed beta on 26th April, which will invite members of the public in. It lets me try a small slice of PvP and play as new character Sojourn - who’s great and I’ll come back to in a moment - as well as test significant reworks for existing heroes Bastion, Doomfist, Orisa and Sombra. There are new maps and modes, a new ping feature, five-versus-five team sizes, a graphical facelift and a new user interface, and they all combine to make Overwatch 2 feel refreshing if not remarkably new....
