This year’s Summer Games Done Quick serves up a week of speedrunning fun from Sunday, 26th June to 3rd July, and will feature more than 120 speedruns over its run-time, with all money raised during the show going to Doctors Without Borders. I’m delighted because I’ve got a soft spot for Lair of the Clockwork God. I reviewed it on PC in 2020 and loved it. It’s an adventure game and sometimes a platform game about two characters, Dan and Ben. And they bicker, endlessly. One represents point-and-clicks, and the other, platformers. And they don’t always get along. It’s relentlessly funny which, I know, is a confrontational thing to say because you’re all like, “yeah but I bet you can’t make me laugh”....

The unannounced game, known internally as Volt, was set to be a three-player co-operative live service game to rival Destiny. The game’s name was apparently short for Voltron, and one key mechanic would have seen enemies fusing together. But despite the time and money pumped into the project so far, parent company Take-Two has now decided to can the game - potentially affecting nearly 200 people’s jobs. Reports last night from Bloomberg and Kotaku include an email from Hangar 13 founder Haden Blackman informing staff of the game’s cancellation, while Take-Two announced the financial hit in an earnings call with investors....

First the acquisition news; as of today, following Tencent’s purchase of Turtle Rock’s parent company Slamfire, the studio is now wholly owned by the Chinese conglomerate. Hooked on You was announced during today’s sixth anniversary livestream for the game and is due out later this summer. The interactive visual novel will allow players to flirt and date four of the game’s iconic killers - The Huntress, The Spirit, The Trapper, and The Wraith - all presented in a sexy anime style. “You wanted it? As spotted by Gematsu, the rating request submitted to the board and published yesterday includes a brief summary of the game (in Korean, naturally) and a 12+ age rating. According to Google Translate, Tears of the Kingdom has been described as a “role-playing game for Nintendo Switch in which the stage of the adventure to find Zelda expands into the sky”. The 12+ age rating has seemingly been applied due to the game’s “mild violence” and attacks on “living things”....
