Firewatch’s N64 tribute isn’t exactly a new discovery - it first surfaced in video form back in 2018 - but it seems to be one that’s passed many people by. You play as Phoebe, a young inventor who is taking her Floppy Knights out and about – these are digital creatures, saved on floppy disks, which do the fighting for her. Unlike in turn-based strategy games such as Fire Emblem or Into the Breach, a round doesn’t necessarily consist of movement and attack. Instead you can use cards for as long as you have energy, simple as that. But movement plays an unusually large part in Floppy Knights, not because you cover large maps, but because each map has points from which enemies constantly respawn....

The details are the latest to come to light as part of documentation revealed in the Epic Games vs Apple courtroom drama, and which fit into previous leaks. Plans for an NBA tie-in mode, including a LeBron James skin, are detailing an internal report dated June 2020 - though leaks suggest these are still coming. These plans saw Epic prototyping an arcade basketball mini-game for launch within Fortnite’s no-combat Party Royale mode, with dribbling and shooting gameplay plus 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 variants possible....

The Fallout titles are somewhat contentious then, but it was great to return to Skyrim at least. In this case we have a true 4K60 and it’s great to see that the user mod experience we previously tested at Digital Foundry is now made fully official with FPS Boost - though it’s worth stressing these use two different techniques to hit this target. The mod essentially works by removing the 30fps frame-rate cap and disabling v-sync for good measure, allowing Skyrim to tap into the extra horsepower of Series S and X consoles (where back-compat forces v-sync back on)....

As reported by TechRaptor earlier this week, a number of game release dates were seemingly leaked via Steam API, including Frostpunk 2, Kerbal Space Program 2, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. The new Tales game will launch this year and feature a fresh cast of characters, Gearbox’s colourful CEO Randy Pitchford announced on stage at PAX East last night. In development for “many” years, the project has been worked on in-house at Gearbox after the developer saw the critical success of the original Tales - and after Telltale itself sadly closed down. Pitchford concluded by saying the game would get a proper reveal this summer....

As explained in a new developer blog, tomorrow’s God of War update will introduce a brand-new default graphics mode option designed to “get the most out of the increased performance capabilities of the PlayStation 5”. Up until now, PlayStation 5 owners playing God of War have been able to take advantage of the two graphics modes introduced in the PlayStation Pro version of the game - one favouring performance, which unlocks the frame rate but restricts resolution to 1080p, and the other offering a checkerboard 4K resolution locked to 30fps....
