Multiversus was officially unveiled last November following a string of leaks, and now, after and a steady stream of reveals focused on its increasingly proposterous character roster - where the likes of Game of Thrones’ Arya Stark can battle against Scooby Doo’s Shaggy - it finally enters invite-only closed alpha later this week. Multiversus’ closed alpha runs from 19th-27th May, giving participants access to 15 playable fighters, seven maps, and a selection of different modes....

World of Warcraft celebrated its fifth anniversary last week. On 23rd November 2004, Blizzard launched its MMO in North America. Even though some critical features (player-versus-player battlegrounds, for one) weren’t implemented, the game clearly outstripped established rivals in polish and scale at launch, and demand was so intense that Blizzard’s overloaded servers spent the first few months fighting a losing battle against the tide of players. So you can hardly call Blizzard’s first steps in massively multiplayer gaming tentative....

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is free to download and play, and since it went live cheating has already emerged as a problem. For example, Twitch streamer Douglas “DougisRaw” Wolf tweeted a clip of himself watching a clip of a run-in with a Halo Infinite cheater using what looks like an aimbot and a wallhack. But there are many other reports of cheating in Halo Infinite. Here’s a snippet: Already, some console players are calling on 343 to add the ability to turn off crossplay with PC in a bid to avoid running into cheaters on that platform....

D3 Go! - which publishes the Puzzle Quest games, including Marvel Puzzle Quest and Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns - will now join the 505 Games US office in Calabasas, California. The acquisition now gives 505 Games “exclusive ownership of the entire Puzzle Quest franchise”, following the 2021 purchase of Infinity Plus Two, the Australian game development studio and original creators of the Puzzle Quest series. “D3 Go! has done a brilliant job bringing some of the biggest Puzzle Quest titles to market, and it was a natural fit for us to welcome them into the 505 Games family, building on our library of owned IP,” said 505 Games’ free-to-play head, Clive Robert (thanks, Gematsu)....

Eiyuden Chronicle, a new Japanese role-playing game from some of the key creators of beloved 90s JRPG Suikoden, launched a Kickstarter on 27th July 2020 asking for ¥53,808,516 (approx. £370,202). The crowdfunding drive quickly smashed that target, and settled on ¥481,621,841 (approx. £3.4m) from 46,307 backers. The game will feature a traditional six-character battle system with 2D sprites, 3D backgrounds and a story written by Suikoden 1 and 2 scenario writer Yoshitaka Murayama....

UPDATE 20TH MARCH 2021: Treyarch has now said some unlock progress made towards the R1 Shadowhunter will carry over when the weapon is officially released. Responding to negative feedback, the developer said players who previously unlocked the R1 Shadowhunter will be placed at 14 / 15 match completions “due to technical limitations” with player inventories. This “compromise”, Treyarch said, lets the developer adjust inventories appropriately and establish “a path of least resistance” to obtain the R1 Shadowhunter when it eventually comes out....

Sony’s service - now part of the newly-revamped PS Plus Premium, though formerly the separate PlayStation Now subscription - has been home to Red Dead Redemption since 2016. Its departure means there is now no way to play Rockstar’s original cowboy epic on PS4 or PS5. Sony quietly had Red Dead Redemption listed as leaving its streaming service if you looked up the game over the past month, though did not trumpet its departure....

The Age of Empires series has so much history behind it that Relic Entertainment faced a huge challenge in resurrecting the franchise, especially in the wake of the successful remasters for the second and third games. Overall, the game is excellent with much to commend it, delivering an experience that should satisfy series stalwarts while also gently introducing the game to newcomers. As the game starts up, players are immediately introduced to the basic mechanics of the game, teaching you the staples such as resource collecting, technology and the various units’ strengths and weaknesses....

Switchback is coming from Supermassive Games, and sees players embarking on the most terrifying roller coaster ride I have ever seen. It is all set in the world of The Dark Pictures Anthology, with director Alejandro Arque Gallardo calling it “your own personal nightmare”....

We’re looking at the middle child today, courtesy of PowerColor who provided us with the RX 6750 XT Red Devil. It’s an attractive card with a thick thermal solution, three fans and the usual port arrangement: three DisplayPort 1.4 ports and one HDMI 2.1 port. As the name suggests, it lights up in a hellish red colour, and requires two eight-pin auxiliary power inputs. On our unit, one of the card’s three fans seemed to have been damaged in shipping, as it knocked into the side of the shroud at low fan speeds....
