Surviving Mars - which challenges players to rejuvenate the wastes of the red planet, transforming it into a thriving colony of shimmering domes - was well-received when it launched in 2018. A selection of DLC followed, but Below and Beyond will be the game’s first major expansion since 2019’s Green Planet. A free tourism update released earlier this year. Below and Beyond, as its name implies, takes the colony builder to new locales, going below Mars’ surface and beyond its horizon so that players may turn their attention to building underground bases, mining asteroids, and gathering rare resources....

In this all-new adventure, players will take on the role of Nori Kaga, a food cart chef who has her sights set on making it into the big time, just like her role mode - the glamourous Chef Rhubarb. To achieve her goal, Nori moves to the “bustling solarpunk city” of Helianthus, and starts cooking up a storm. The game itself will feature “hundreds of recipes” for players to whip up, as well as multiple other side quests, with gameplay “that stimulates the rhythm and tactility of cooking”....

CrossfireX came to Xbox Game Pass today, much to the excitement of those who have been waiting for its release since it was first announced in 2019. However, fans have been left disappointed, as many are currently unable to gain access to its single player campaign developed by Alan Wake maker Remedy. Microsoft is aware of this issue and has shared it is working to fix it. At the time of writing, its status is currently close to being resolved....

The game was released in a notoriously buggy state, particularly on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which led to a complaint filed in December 2020 that alleged the developer misled both customers and investors on how playable the game was. Now, a federal judge in California has signed off on the settlement (thanks ArsTechnica), where everybody who acquired publicly traded CDPR shares throughout most of 2020 is eligible for settlement funds at roughly $0....

The Ghosts of Night City mod by Hineytroll reveals a whole bunch of unused character assets, including for main characters like Rogue, Jackie and Judy. These all appear to be placeholders, and while some barely resemble their final characters, others look far closer to the finished product. And, to be honest, they’re just quite funny to look at. Here are some screenshots of Judy, Lizzy Wizzy, Jackie, Rogue and Panam, who all vaguely resemble their final versions - aside from Panam’s extremely blonde hair, perhaps....

The company took to Twitter to explain its decision, saying it “dearly wanted to deliver Patch 1.2 for Cyberpunk 2077 in the timespan [it] detailed previously” but “the recent cyber attack on the studio’s IT infrastructure and extensive scope of the update mean this unfortunately will not happen”. It seems CD Projekt will now need additional time to release the update. As for what patch 1.2 contains, it will apparently go “beyond any of [CD Projekt’s] previous updates” with “numerous overall quality improvements and fixes”....

The developer announced the change yesterday in a conference call held following the company’s big strategy update, where it briefed investors on how it will continue both Cyberpunk and Witcher franchises over the next few years. Yesterday’s strategy update vaguely mentioned “reconsidered” multiplayer plans for Cyberpunk 2077, which CD Projekt boss Adam Kiciński was then asked to clarify. “Regarding online, we are changing our approach, so we want to have online in our future games, definitely, but step-by-step,” Kiciński said (thanks, VGC)....

In returning to Days Gone, I actually found a title that had evolved significantly since Digital Foundry first covered the game - so while there is a clear PS5 advantage, it’s actually building upon a solid PlayStation 4 version that irons out many of the issues we discovered at launch. Developer Bend Studios received plaudits for Patch 1.61 in particular, which dropped the initial 60GB storage footprint down to just 38GB, consolidating a number of optimisations which drastically reduced the fleeting performance problems we found in the first couple of patches....

The DLC adds a new original killer and survivor, as well as a brand new map set in an abandoned Chilean graveyard. In addition, the game will be available on the Epic Games Store from 2nd December, including all past available DLC. The Artist is the new killer, able to summon a flock of killer crows. She’s joined by Survivor Jonah Vasquez, a brilliant Mexican American CIA codebreaker. “Birds have borne a very powerful sense of fear and fascination throughout the history of horror, so The Artist is for us a love letter to the genre....

In its weekly blog post, or TWAB, the company explained some of the weapon balance changes players can expect, which includes buffing some of the game’s under-utilised weapon archetypes. For example, lightweight bows will get faster draw times as well as an increased “perfect draw” window to make things a bit easier for players. Meanwhile, scout rifles will now give 10 percent more damage against red bar PvE enemies than before....

Similar to the Lures in Season of the Hunt, the Hammer allows you to earn rewards by engaging in the Battlegrounds seasonal activity. Secret missions are represented by a huge pentagram, and you’ll have to find a specific place to stand that will glow on touch, and then center the camera to align the shape accordingly. Once that’s settled, a prompt will appear with the mission objective, which goes from eliminating all enemies without taking damage or performing a kill with just one shot. Keep in mind that you don’t need to complete them immediately....

But without digging into the video, I’m sure you’d all like to know what happens when an Xbox SSD is placed into PlayStation 5 because here’s the thing… it should work. Based on our tests, the console will work with any PCIe gen 4 NVMe drive. The only guidance is that you should be looking for read speed minimums of 5500MB/s. Of course, the theoretical bandwidth of the Xbox drive is much lower (circa 2400MB/s) but the point is that lower speed drives work - Sony just doesn’t recommend using them....

There’s also discussion of the news that Xbox Series S has more memory given to developers via a new update to the GDK development environment. The question is, can the ‘hundreds of megabytes’ added to the existing 8GB of memory make a significant difference? Alex suggests that we may see more RT modes, with the new RAM allocated to the BVH structures required to trace rays. As a counterpoint, I suggest that with 12....

The new content includes Terror Zones, the “fresh way to experience the journey to level 99 during seasons” that were launched on the public test realm a little while back as an all-new “experimental” feature. “Terror looms every hour as the armies of the Burning Hells cause monsters in a specific zone to increase in power and level, encouraging players to level up and collect loot in locations all across Sanctuary,” Blizzard teases....

Disco Elysium launched on PlayStation 4 and 5 in The Final Cut form in March, and significant issues soon emerged. Patch notes promise “optimised game stability on all platforms” but for Nintendo Switch in particular, where developer Gameloft has put a “considerable focus” this time around. The popular Disney life sim is now fully compatible with Steam Deck and verified by Steam. Fun tweaks include the ability to light fireplaces (without worrying about your fuel bill), buy iron ingots from Kristoff (which will save a lot of mining grind) and find wood easier in each biome....

In April 2020, Gordon distanced himself from the soundtrack album for Doom Eternal after it received criticisms from fans on its quality. This led to speculation from fans about its production, and Stratton, who was working as executive producer on Doom Eternal, posted an open letter to the Doom subreddit to address rumours. A year and a half later, Gordon has written a lengthy statement rebutting Stratton’s claims, with screenshots of emails and legal documents (with sensitive information removed) as evidence of the true timeline of events....

It’s always lovely to come across fellow enthusiasts, and developer Team Ladybug’s passion for the genre shines clearly throughout the somewhat unfortunately named Drainus - the moniker a nod to the grand dames of the side-scrolling shooter genre that provide the big inspiration that would be adorable if it didn’t also sound like a synonym for taking a dump. Still, silly names have never stopped shooting games in the past and they certainly don’t dent what’s a fine effort here....
