At the time of this article’s publication, Microsoft’s real-time strategy game had 64,550 concurrent players on Steam - with the number growing slowly but steadily throughout the day. That’s more concurrent players than Destiny 2, Warframe and Civilization 6. That figure is also way ahead of the series’ best ever current players figure of 38,725, set by Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition nine months ago (thanks, SteamDB). For extra context, Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition managed an all-time peak current players number of 20,146 13 months ago....

Set in feudal Japan, Assassin’s Creed: Project Red will arrive at some point after 2023. It’s described as an open-world RPG, a chance for fans to live out their powerful shinobi fantasy, and is in development by the talented Quebec-based team behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Sometime after that, Assassin’s Creed: Project Hexe will be next to launch. Details are extremely thin, but it looks to be a mysterious, witchcraft-inspired entry, and is being worked on by the Valhalla team at Ubisoft Montreal....

The collaboration will go live on 6th December, when Destiny cosmetics themed around Lord Shaxx and Saint-14 will become available to buy in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Assassin’s Creed-themed items - I can see an Apple of Eden-style ghost shell! - will then go live via Destiny 2’s Eververse shop. One final note from Ubisoft confirms a free weekend for Valhalla is on the way. You’ll be able to dip your toe into Eivor’s Viking adventures for no cost from 15th to 19th December....

Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace, to give the adaptation it’s official name, is a narrative-driven tactical RPG that sets players loose in the titular town of Arkham, circa 1926 - more specifically, in a spooky old mansion, where the murder of an astronomy professor has occurred. What follows is a riff on the board game series’ familiar Lovecraft-tinged exploratory action, requiring players to first assemble a crack team of investigators from 12 uniquely skilled characters - drawn from all across the Arkham Horror universe....

In a post on Bungie.net, the developer said it’s making two key changes to matchmaking based on how things went on the successful reintroduction of Trials last weekend. The first of these relates to the matchmaking for players after seven wins. “That area of matchmaking has a significantly higher rate of 5-0 games than we would like, so we are enabling a ‘flawless matchmaking’ pool,” Bungie said. “However, we want to make sure that there are enough flawless players to maintain good matchmaking times - so we are waiting until Friday afternoon to turn this on, and we will be watching player reactions and matchmaking analytics all weekend to make sure it is behaving properly....

While Bungie’s official announcement didn’t share specifics about the livestream, the developer has already been extremely forthcoming regarding the next few years for Destiny 2, so it’s almost certain August will see the developer showcasing its previously announced, but still mysterious, Lightfall expansion. Revealed back in June 2020, Lightfall - which is currently expected to launch sometime in 2023 - will be Destiny 2’s penultimate expansion, coming between this year’s The Witch Queen and the game’s finale expansion The Final Shape....

The game will see the series move to Unreal Engine 5 and mark the start of a new “strategic partnership” with Epic Games. Martinet, who is 66, has been the voice of Nintendo’s legendary mascot since 1992. After almost 30 years, Martinet has portrayed the plumber in around 100 games. But, controversially, Martinet will not play Mario in Nintendo’s upcoming Super Mario movie - which seems likely to be the character’s most verbose outing yet. Instead, Nintendo chose Hollywood hunk Chris Pratt for the job, and said Martinet will instead be included in cameo roles....
