Wordle, the new one that is, has taken the world by storm in recent months, with users returning to play the word-based head scratcher day after day. Despite its success, creator Josh Wardle has pledged to keep his game browser-based and ad-free - a decision that’s lead to plenty of unscrupulous sorts cloning the game to turn a quick profit on mobile app stores. One Wordle app, however, is legit, predating Wardle’s game by five years - and its developer, Steven Cravotta, was both surprised and bemused (thanks Games Radar) to discover the software he’d long abandoned and left to languish in a mustier corner of the iOS App Store was suddenly gaining immense traction following mainstream media coverage of the newer puzzler....

Fitting with the culture of the company, employees of Devolver Digital are still the majority owners, though NetEase and Sony now own eight and five per cent stakes, respectively. Devolver says the move will allow it to invest in new games and partner (acquire) with studios it was previously unable to consider, as well as increase its staff count. More than 100 HDR (high-dynamic-range) titles optimised for Xbox Series X and S are available now or coming soon in Dolby Vision, Microsoft said in a post on Xbox Wire. Halo Infinite is one example of an upcoming game that takes full advantage of Dolby Vision, Microsoft said. Thousands of classic HDR10 and Auto HDR games will benefit from improved picture quality through the new Dolby Vision enhancement on Xbox Series X and S, Microsoft added....

That’s according to a fresh report on the game’s production by Venturebeat journalist Jeff Grubb, which pegged its release to late 2023. Bay 12 Games’ famously impenetrable simulation game launched on Steam on 6th December in spruced up form, with actual graphics as opposed to the text or “ASCII” graphics of the original version. In a forum post, programmer and co-designer Tarn Adams declared Dwarf Fortress’ Steam launch, which came after 16 years of free availability, a “wild success”. Dwarf Fortress is also sitting on an “overwhelmingly positive” user review rating on Steam....

The latest figures show that, even with a somewhat mixed bag of reviews, there is definitely enthusiasm for Techland’s zombie ridden, parkour powered brawl. On its launch, Dying Light 2 saw 160,202 concurrent players on Steam (via Benji Sales). To put this into perspective, that is 3.5 times that of Dying Light 1’s all-time peak, and 50 percent bigger than that of Capcom’s Resident Evil Village. These figures are great news for Techland - and suggests not everyone was put off by the idea of Dying Light 2 would take players over 500 hours to complete....

EA Sports announced it’s signed an exclusive, multi-year partnership with the Old Lady, which sees Juventus return to the FIFA fold with full in-game integration that includes Juventus’ official club logo and kits and the rights to the Juventus Stadium, Allianz Arena. There’s more: former footballer and Juventus legend Claudio Marchisio is in FIFA 23 as a FUT Hero card for use in Ultimate Team. In 2019, Konami raised eyebrows when it announced PES 2020 had Juventus as a genuine exclusive team, forcing FIFA to use fake club Piemonte Calcio instead....

New user interfaces are an odd aspect of a new console’s release. They don’t make or break its success - that’s primarily down to the games, raw horsepower, price and where your friends are playing. But nonetheless, they are an essential component to every console. It’s a persistent part of the experience of gaming. You have to look at it every time you boot your console up. While we tend to ignore that it’s there when it works well, a bad interface can ruin a gaming session....

The Game Awards kicked off with a cinematic for Dead Cells DLC Return to Castlevania, which comes out Q1 2023. It’s a new Castelvania! Sort of. We then got a short video for super popular roguelike shoot ’em up Vampire Survivors on mobile. It’s out now! Surprise! There’s a Valiant Hearts sequel in the works from Ubisoft. It’s called Valiant Hearts Coming Home. And then, finally, we got confirmation of PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal’s arrival on PC....

And it played…well, at first it was decent multiplayer horror stuff. For a morning I played in part of a gang of survivors online, four of us against a single demon player. Your job is to collect a bunch of stuff and then nuke the big baddies at the end of it all, while a timer ticks down and every major action you attempt - grabbing a map fragment or the magical dagger you need - brings the horde....

This latest update to Luke’s R.E.A.L. VR mod is now available to download from his Patreon page and it’s easily his most impressive work yet. Not only does it allow you to play through the entirety of Elden Ring in either third or first-person VR but it also comes with an easy to use quick menu that lets you pause the gameplay and alter the mod at any point in the game....

We know very little about the next game from official channels, but the huge leak on Monday gave us our biggest (albeit unfinished) look at the title. Moreover, with various reports reporting on the game’s location, characters and gameplay elements, there appears to be enough to go on to start the mapping process. As reported by Kotaku, of paramount importance, however, is to avoid any leaks into the work. Take-Two Interactive are notorious for taking down anything that has a slight whiff of copyright infringement, as modders know all too well....

Last week we reported that Sony had seemingly removed expiry dates from PS Plus, with only one game listed in the Last Chance to Play tab. Now that tab has disappeared. Rez, the only game in the tab at the time of writing, is still currently listed as a PS Plus game, but without an expiry date.
