Less revelatory but still important are some of the key discussion topics raised by last week’s news, kicking off with news that Sony is continuing to produce PlayStation 4 when Microsoft has completely discontinued all flavours of Xbox One. The news was framed by the idea that Sony can’t physically supply enough PS5s, meaning that PS4 production was ramped up to the fill the gap. It is true that Sony has previously said that its primary objective is to transition from one generation to the next as quickly as possible, but the fact is that there’s always an extended transition period between console generations....

And when a media briefing like Sony’s PlayStation 5 reveal effectively sees the entirety of the game content captured in real-time from console, it’s a genuine event....

You can’t have a hero without a villain and Marvel sure has some memorable ones, which is why the Marvel Villainous board game series is such a fun idea....

First details of the game were published by the PlayStation Japan blog, which also shared a fresh announcement trailer, below. The setting for Disgaea 7 is a world called the Hinomoto Netherworld Cluster, which is heavily inspired by Japanese history and culture. The trailer reveals that the plot will centre around bushido, the moral code of samurai, and introduces the seven main characters (translated via Gematsu). The Disgaea series is known for its over-the-top mechanics and things like a level cap of 99,999,999 allowing players to deal 10,000,000,000,000,000 damage....

In a blog post mentioning the leak, developer Full Circle revealed that it comprised a version of the game dating back to September 2021 that was “never intended for external use” - rather than a leaked playtest or demo. “While we understand you’re excited to get into the game, we encourage you to be careful when downloading files from unknown sources (and remind you of the potential consequences of breaking EA’s Terms of Service),” Full Circle wrote....

The group, which is part of a contacted game services company named Keywords Studios, were recently told by that company they would need to return to office working full-time, five days a week, beginning in May (thanks, Kotaku). In-office working - “embedded” within a developer - is one of the services which Keywords offers, and over the years the company has worked with BioWare and others to offer development support in this way....

“Several sources familiar with these talks say EA has been persistent in pursuing a sale, and has only grown more emboldened in the wake of the Microsoft-Activision deal. Others say that EA is primarily interested in a merger arrangement that would allow Wilson to remain as chief executive of the combined company.” Its unclear if a deal is currently in negotiation, but the reporter hinted that a deal with NBCUniversal had progressed the furthest, before breaking down last month after parties were unable to agree on structure or price....

As part of its first ever Behind the Sims Summit Stream event , EA gave a “super early” look at its next Sims game, codenamed Project Rene, and shared a few future plans for The Sims 4. However, as first noted by content creator and streamer Ebonix and amplified by other unhappy players, the presentation - in EA’s own words - “did not fairly represent our vast community of players”, forcing EA to acknowledge it had “let [players] down”....

EA Play Live, which debuted back in 2016, has traditionally been held alongside E3, combining game announcements with hands-on demos for those able to attend in person. The show had transitioned to a digital-only offering in the last two years in response to the coronavirus pandemic, but now EA has opted to cancel its 2022 event in its entirety. In a statement shared with IGN, EA said its decision was based on the fact that “this year things aren’t lining up to show you everything on one date”....

The news comes in the wake of the extended and ongoing downtime for the Dark Souls series’ PC online servers following reports of an exploit which allowed remote code execution (essentially, something that would allow someone else to take control of your PC). The suggestion was that Elden Ring would suffer from the same exploit, and Bandai Namco has until now been quiet on whether its big new release would be made safe in time for launch....

The Elder Scrolls Online: Console Enhanced was due out 8th June, but will now launch 15th June, Bethesda said in a blog post. “In an abundance of caution, we are moving the ESO: Console Enhanced launch out a week,” the company said. “We are doing this so we are not launching Update 30 (Blackwood) at the same time as Console Enhanced and can give both our undivided attention.” Blackwood is the Oblivion-themed chapter for The Elder Scrolls Online....

I played as the barbarian and the druid but not the sorceress - the three classes (of five) announced so far - and the thing to know upfront is Diablo 4 is gorgeous, muscular fun. Abilities have a chunky, physical presence in the world, like the druid’s boulder, which bowls into enemies and keeps knocking them back as it rolls. Freezing, smashing, charging - it’s a game which makes you constantly feel powerful, and where pushing enemies around is more important than ever....

Chatting in this week’s Famitsu, Yoji Fujito revealed the game will not be shut down “anytime soon”. “Due to past comments, there may be some people who are worried that the game will be shutting down in 2022,” Fujito stated (translated by siliconera). “But I don’t think you will have to be concerned about that happening anytime soon.” This is in line with what producer Akihiko Matsui also told the publication....
