PopCap puzzler Peggle 2 and third-person shooter Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville meanwhile both arrive on Thursday, 20th May for cloud devices via EA Play. Multiplayer horror Secret Neighbor (for PC) and lovely-looking indie The Wild at Heart (for console and PC) also turn up on the 20th....

The Strong Museum’s World Video Game Hall of Fame, based in Rochester, New York, has inducted 36 games since it began in 2015. Now it includes three seminal games, all deserving of their place. Nintendo’s 1998 classic was the first 3D Zelda game, setting the template for future 3D action-adventure games to this day. It also remains the highest scoring game of all time (according to Metacritic) and is widely considered one of the best games ever made....

We see this, of course, in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, an exquisite but flawed attempt to blend the rhythms of the old FF7 battle system with the action movie choreography that has long hypnotised the likes of Motomu Toriyama, FF7R’s co-director. Where battle in Final Fantasy on PS1 resembles a quaint theatre production, with characters lining up against painted backdrops (FF9’s intro actually concludes with a brawl on-stage), battle in FF7R is a sprawling, hyperactive mess of flying limbs and blades, streaking projectiles and screen-whiting detonations....

This series takes Mega Man X, with its dashing, jumping, blasting platform play, and spins it into a roguelite. Bosses still give you an extra power, but the levels and all that jazz are procedurally scrambled. The controls are beautiful - movement has a lovely sense of weight, and there’s a bit of Capcom mastery in stuff like the dash-jump that can get you across long gaps. Throw in level gadgets like blocks that move in a certain direction before exploding and platforms that only exist for a few seconds after you hit the switch and there’s plenty to think about....

Known as the Diversity Space Tool, it was started in 2016 and has been in beta at mobile studio King. It’s intended to boost the diversity of characters in games, but has been criticised for belittling diversity and diminishing it to a checklist. As explained by associate live balance designer John Larson, players figured out that hovering with Valkyrie’s jetpack currently costs very little fuel - and were using this to “take coffee breaks above the final fight in scrims”. It reminds me a bit of when Fortnite players used planes to stay out of battles until the very last moment. In any case, the 10 percent fuel cost for hovering is now being removed entirely, and from Thursday onwards it will cost you the full 100 percent to hang around in the air....
