McDonald’s video appears to show custom code being read by a PS5 through an exploit in its online User Guide. Once run, the console is able to access debug settings and then install the infamous PT demo - which is, of course, no longer available under normal circumstances. So, how bad is this for Sony? Well, for now, the use of this exploit is limited. Reportedly this method is still “fairly unstable” and offers “read/write access, but no execute” - so you could download the PT demo, for example, but not yet play it....

Before going into the specifics, the introduction of this feature shows that Sony is responding more readily to consumer feedback. Not only has support for 1440p monitors been implemented, the firm has also responded to criticisms of its initial implementation of Auto Low Latency Mode support, an option that basically automatically invokes Game Mode on HDMI 2.1 TVs. First of all, ALLM wasn’t available at all, then it was added but couldn’t be turned off (causing issues with other TV features, such as black frame insertion)....

Writing via the PlayStation blog, studios boss Hermen Hulst listed this year’s various PS4 and PS5 games - “huge releases including Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, MLB The Show 22, and on November 9th, the highly anticipated God of War: Ragnarök” - as well as PlayStation VR2, to demonstrate its commitment to console gaming. At the same time, Hulst announced Sony was acquiring Savage Game Studios, a mobile game team based in Berlin and Helsinki, and folding it into the new PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, which will “operate independently from our console development and focus on innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP”....

Rockfish Games’ spaceship shooter goes live at 6pm UK time tonight. Everspace 2 is described as a fast-paced, single-player space shooter with deep exploration, tons of loot, and modern RPG elements. The early access launch game has full English voice acting for the first 12 hours of the story campaign and several side missions that take place in the first two star systems of the final game....

This has been a long requested feature by PS5 owners, and a feature that the Xbox Series X/S has supported since launch. The feature is currently only available for users signed up to the beta firmware channel, but it should be released to all users very soon. Games that natively support 1440p will be rendered at that resolution, while 4K games will be downsampled for better anti-aliasing. Digital Foundry also notes that the firmware supports 120Hz at 1440p with either HDR or SDR, but not Variable Refresh Rate....
